Last week the staff at Edmonds & Slatter Opticians in Glenfield gave up their days off to run an extra sight test clinic for 14 young children visiting from Chernobyl.

Their visit was arranged by the Friends of Chernobyl’s Children charity (Markfield Branch), as part of a 4 week recuperative visit to the UK which will help build up their immune systems.

At home in Belarus the radioactive contamination from the 1986 nuclear accident still affects the atmosphere resulting in the children being at high risk of contracting cancer or leukaemia. The children are often not expected to survive past 40 but a month of care in the UK boosts their shattered immune systems and can extend their lifespan by up to two years.

Assistant Manager Carol Barker said “All British children enjoy the privilege of a free eye test from the NHS but as these children were visitors we were happy to donate our time and testing skills free of charge”

Everyone had a clean bill of optical health so no spectacles were required, but they did not leave empty handed as goodie bags with assorted toys and sweets were provided for all.
