The staff at Edmonds and Slatter were nominated earlier this year for the 2015 'Charity Initiative of the Year' accolade, recognising the charity work that they undertake beyond their day job.

All members of staff participate in events that help to strengthen ties within the community whilst raising funds for many different local and national charities. The events are publicised through the practices, website, Facebook and Twitter sites and vary from an individual staff member taking part in an athletic challenge for sponsorship to selling raffle tickets and wristbands, or a voluntary optical clinic for disadvantaged children from Chernobyl.

The activities can be incorporated into the working day – such as HOPE Against Cancer’s Blue Friday or Optometry Giving Sight’s World Sight Day Challenge. Other times it happens outside working hours. Socially the team meets up outside of work for meals and charitable events that benefit the local community. Just in the past year the team has participated in The London Marathon, The HOPE Quiz night, and even a naked calendar shoot for Pancreatic Cancer Research! The team recognise that the main objective of any such event is to raise as much money for the chosen charity as possible, and over the past year they have collected almost £5000 for various charities.

Frozen Group opt

Every year Edmonds and Slatter has an open evening to celebrate the Christmas lights switch-on and hold an annual Christmas raffle to raise money for a nominated charity. They also use this opportunity to have a festive “open-house” for patients, inviting them along for a drink, mince pie, and maybe a goodie bag to take home. Almost all of the team volunteer their free time to put on the event. This year will be no exception.

Saagar Hirani, Partner at Edmonds and Slatter opticians, attended AOP Awards ceremony on behalf of his team.  Speaking about the award, he said “We have learnt that as an independent practice engaging with your patients and community is vital.  Charity work involves a lot of interaction with your community and you need to get out there and be part of that community too!”
