Local Optometrist Rosemary Lowdon, who is based at the Lutterworth branch of Edmonds And Slatter Opticians, is a trustee of Malawi Orphan Fund, a UK charity set up to raise funds for the Home Of Hope Orphanage in Malawi that has been at the centre of the Madonna adoption row recently. The media spotlight is still firmly focussed on Madonna but it is the children that have been left behind that need food, clothes and education.

The home relies on funding and aid from charities and organistions, many in Malawi and Lutterworth. The home is situated one and a half hours drive from Lilongwe, the capital city and many of the 400 children there are babies whose family cannot afford to feed them. They are homed in sparse concrete and corrugated iron houses and have very few school books. They live in a country where 8.4% of the population is suffering from Aids and some are HIV positive.

Mrs Lowdon says ‘education is the best way to give these children a future and we are trying to raise £25,000 to further school building projects’ People can sponsor a child for £12 or £15 a month but for £100 they can sponsor a teacher. Primary school teachers are paid about £1,000 a year and secondary school teachers £1,200 a year. If you would like more information or would like to sponsor a child or a teacher email Rosemary at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
