Edmonds and Slatter Opticians now have 15 Ocular Hygienists amongst their staff. The latest team member to gain the qualification is Sally Ball, pictured right, being presented with her certificate by Mary Jenvey of Spectrum-Thea.

The training focuses on eye conditions including Blepharitis and Dry Eye which can affect a patient’s vision and visual comfort. The Hygienists are now able to provide the necessary information for patients on good eye health and helping to keep these conditions at bay.

Tim Cole, Partner commented “We are very proud of all our Ocular Hygienists, they are now able to advise and assist our patients who suffer from Dry Eye and Blepharitis. At the same time they have developed their professional skills”, he continued “Approximately 60% of patients suffer from Dry Eye or Blepharitis and are unaware that these conditions can be prevented through a good cleaning regime and our Hygienists are perfectly placed to provide this advice saving our patients from experiencing unnecessary discomfort and problems.

Assistant Manageress Linda Southin was one of the first members of staff at Edmonds and Slatter to become an Ocular Hygienist. “I really enjoy the role. It lets me make the most of my additional knowledge and skills to help our patients” commented Linda, “I am now able to take a handover from our optometrist and, where the optometrist may have been time-restricted, I have the time to carefully explain to the patient their new cleaning regime in plain English and go over anything they have questions about in more detail” she continued “I know a lot of patients find it very useful to have me demonstrate the product to them especially if they are older and would like things reiterating. The patients also have me available as a contact. If they have any more questions once they are home they can call me and I will be much easier to get in touch with than a busy optometrist.”
