Local optometrist, Saagar Hirani and the staff of Edmonds and Slatter Opticians, have won a Bronze fundraising award from eye care charity Optometry Giving Sight. The award is in recognition of fundraising by their Blaby, Lutterworth and Glenfield practices during the October 2014 World Sight Day Challenge.
On World Sight Day (October 9th) and throughout the whole of the month of October, Edmonds and Slatter, with the support of their patients accepted donations for spectacle adjustments and sold charity wristbands at a suggested price of £3 each. The price of the wristbands was uniquely set as just £3 can be enough to help provide an eye exam and a pair of glasses to someone living in an underserved community.
“As an optical practice, we think it is incredibly important to support a cause that is helping provide eye care to people for whom this vital service is not available” said Mr Hirani. “The World Sight Day Challenge is a fun way to involve our patients in supporting overseas projects that are helping thousands of people have access to exe exams and glasses.”
All the donations and funds raised will help more than 600 million people in the world who are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye exam or glasses. Thanks to past donations, Optometry Giving Sight has been able to fund 72 projects in 42 countries. Funds raised from World Sight Day Challenge will be directed to projects in 23 countries around the world that give sight to those most in need.
