What were you doing in 1986? It was the year we saw Halley’s Comet for the first time, the nuclear accident at Chernobyl caused chaos for many and a young Mike Tyson won his first ever boxing title. It was also the year that John Edmonds and Karyn Slatter first opened the doors to Edmonds and Slatter opticians in Blaby.
The practice opened with just one staff member, Linda Smith, who still remains a valued employee to this day! The opticians also worked closely with a glazing laboratory which at the time was run by Roger Slatter, Karyn’s husband.
“Before it was an opticians, the practice used to be a decorating shop.” recalls Karyn, looking back on the opening of the practice. “Money was tight so we refitted the shop ourselves, scraping layers and layers of wallpaper from the walls with the help of my dad. John helped out occasionally, when a brush was thrust into his hands!”
1987 saw the opening of a second practice in Glenfield, followed a few years later by the opening of the Lutterworth branch in 1990. In 2005 Edmonds and Slatter bought the glazing business RS Optical, to allow greater control over their products by ensuring that each lens is made to the exact specifications required. Then when John Edmonds retired in 2006, Partners Tim Cole and Saagar Hirani took the reins alongside Karyn.
“We still offer the same high level of customer service as when we first opened in 1986” explains Tim, “and this remains a priority for all of our members of staff.” Although much has changed since 1986, Edmonds and Slatter’s commitment to the very best patient care remains. The number of patients who have remained loyal to the practice since the early days in the 1980s is a testament to the quality of the service that Edmonds and Slatter provide and the patient satisfaction achieved.
