Low vision can be caused by a number of conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma or complications associated with diabetes. It can have a big effect on quality of life, and many people with low vision rely on aids such as magnifiers and bold-print books to help them in day-to-day life.
Local opticians Edmonds and Slatter are now able to supply a new lens which has the potential to offer improved vision to those with macular degeneration, a condition which leaves people with blurred central vision. The lens is designed to project light onto a healthier part of the macula at the back of the eye, which can in some cases improve vision for the patient dramatically. The lens may also help to reduce sensitivity to daylight due to the tint and anti-glare coating that comes with it.
Tim Cole, Dispensing Optician, commented “We can demonstrate the effects of the new lens easily in the practice. If the lens is beneficial to the patient, they will usually be able to see a big improvement straight away. The lenses can then be fitted into a pair of glasses, or purchased as a clip-on to wear over an existing pair of glasses.”
