What is the best vegetable for eyesight? Did you say carrot? You may be wrong, Leafy greens like Kale, Spinach and broccoli are the new champions here at Edmonds and Slatter Opticians.
You may have seen the recent programme on BBC2 (Trust me I’m a doctor, Thursday 8th September, now on IPlayer) which examined the benefits of taking supplements for your health. It contained a very interesting study conducted on the eye, Macula health and taking supplements which our Optometrist Mr Hirani is only to aware of.
The Macula forms part of the retina at the back of the eye. It is a very small section, only the size of a grain of rice, but it is responsible for our central detailed vision along with our colour vision and fine detail perception. The rest of the back of the eye is responsible for our peripheral or side-vision. Once damaged, the change in vision can be devastating.
The Macula contains a lot of nutrients called Lutein and zeaxanthin that work like internal sunglasses inside your eyes protecting them from damaging light. Lutein is present in your eyes from birth but decreases with age. The human body is unable to replenish these nutrients itself so it must be done through either diet or supplements. They are found in fruits, also some species of fish and seafood, but are most highly concentrated in dark leafy green vegetables.
There are many forms of macular disease and many causes including age and genetics but you can limit your own risk factors by not smoking, not drinking to excess, protecting your eyes from direct sunlight and maintaining a healthy weight and blood pressure. Having a healthy diet is always preferable but it is not always possible to consume the vast amount of vegetables required to keep maintaining the best amount of these nutrients.
MacuShield is a once a day, easy to take, food supplement which combines all three macular carotenoids, lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin in a single capsule. A lot simpler than trying to consume 17 salad bags of spinach each and every month!
We have chosen to stock MacuShield at Edmonds & Slatter as it is now the UK’s most recommended eye supplement.
