Edmonds & Slatter Opticians are now able to offer patients at their Lutterworth practice access to the optomap as part of their Advanced eye tests. The optomap is a 200 degree digital image of the retina captured by a retinal screening device called the Optos Daytona.
The ultra-widefield, high-resolution digital images called optomaps cover approximately 82% of the retina, something no other device is capable of doing in a single image. This is much wider than a traditional 45 degree image available on less complex machines.
“I am extremely pleased to offer this technology to my patients,” said Optometrist Cathy Dallimore. “One of the most important parts of the eye examination is determining the health of the retina. The optomap provides us with a permanent digital image which I can study and magnify to have the most comprehensive view of the back of the eye in order to better and more effectively discover any abnormalities that may be present.”
The Optos Daytona non-invasively captures, within a quarter of a second, the ultra-widefield digital image of the retina, revealing important information for the comprehensive evaluation of systemic and ocular health. Much like taking a digital photograph of the inside of your eye that includes a vast array of healthcare information.
At Edmonds & Slatter in Lutterworth, the optomap is performed as one of the initial steps in an Advanced eye test providing the Optician with a tool to help discover retinal disease, and assist in the diagnosis of eye conditions – and potentially other health conditions – early. It also enables the Optician to effectively determine the next course of action.
Early detection of any retinal abnormality may lead to earlier and safer treatments and in many cases prevent vision loss. It is most benificial if an optomap can be performed annually regardless of symptoms, thereby allowing your Optician to observe even subtle changes occurring as your eyes develop and age.
Since its launch in 1999, millions of optomap images have been taken worldwide, aiding in the detection and diagnosis of serious eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, macular degeneration, and melanomas.
