This August the staff at Edmonds & Slatter Opticians in Glenfield gave up their time to run an extra sight test clinic for 13 young children visiting from Chernobyl. The visit was arranged by the charity Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leics), as part of a 4 week recuperative visit to the UK which will help build up their immune systems.
At home in Belarus the radioactive contamination from the 1986 nuclear accident still affects the atmosphere, damaging white blood cells, resulting in the children being at high risk of contracting cancer or leukaemia. The children are often not expected to survive past 40 but a month of care in the UK boosts their shattered immune systems and can extend their lifespan by up to two years.
All the children had a clean bill of optical health, 5 pairs of prescription spectacles were required. Each visiting child was presented with a pair of Rock Star sunglasses and a goodie bag containing assorted toys and sweets.
Optical Assistant Natasha Cornish said “We have been seeing groups of children from the charity for 10 years now and it’s lovely to see them grow. We are looking forward to seeing them again next year.”
